In his heart a man plans his
course, but the LORD determines his steps.
Proverbs 16:9
The
other day I was driving in inner city, Kansas City. I love living near the city, but there is
just something about Kansas City's essence. You can be driving for blocks of old historic houses and all of a sudden
be in the “ghetto”. I am probably being paranoid
because I grew up a country girl, but some may agree.
I was driving along and had to stop at a stop sign for an uncomfortable amount
of time. I say this because next to me
on the side walk was a woman in a wheel chair talking very closely to a man on
a bench. They looked homeless. I know I was probably being quick to judge,
but what I really noticed was their connection.
They were SO into each
other. The way they looked at each other
and were speaking to each other, spoke a million words even though I could not
hear them. As I was pulling away
(finally), they kissed. I’m sure I let
out a happy sigh.
It
immediately made me think about how I had listened to Paul Harvey’s radio show as
a kid. His radio show would tell stories
about regular people and how they made something of themselves. Did you know that Paul Harvey was his own Rest of the Story segment? His dad was a cop that died when he was a
toddler and later a teacher found something in him. She pushed him to be on the radio. He went from cleaning a radio studio as a
young teen to shortly later having his voice on the radio. Someone believed in him “and that’s the rest
of the story”.
As
I was driving away, I was thinking how happy this couple was no matter what
state their life might have been. I don’t
know the rest of their story. God
does.
It
is kind of like our kids. We don’t know
what is the rest of the story? We want
to plan their story for them. Only God can do that. He has given them to us on loan to care for
and prepare for Him. We have to trust Him the way He trusts us to
rear them IN HIM.
HAVE
YOU EVER given God the rest of the story?
